Oakland’s Daily Shadows
PROJECT TYPEProject Overview
A group study focused on completing and entering an architecture competition Shadow House, experiential housing focused on housing a young couple in their 20’s without the use of Artificial Lighting. Our team wanted to highlight the natural shadows produced by the building itself while initiating the start of an urban community. Inspired by the interplay of shadows found throughout Oaklands Architecture and a take on tackling the cities ongoing housing crisis. Daily Shadows was conceived as a solution to dense apartment structures, promoting and igniting urban a community. Oakland is a thriving city grown from challenges, creativity and community. With a population of 436, 504 residents, with 57.2 thousand consisting of homeless and low-income individuals (“Oakland CA”). Residents were studied to examine residential instability - focused on house crowding and relocation. During the Covid-19 Pandemic, families in Oakland began to overcrowd single family homes (Hwang, Kumar, and Kneebone). With our complex shadows, each single bedroom and studio room have been crafted from steel shipping containers offering a fixed outer shell. By creating opening s in the infrastructure, we can introduce plenty of natural lighting. Located by the “Black” Lake Merritt, young couples will have the ability to enjoy a beloved part of Oakland. Our experimental housing would provide the necessities to develop a welcoming space, while igniting the room for growth in the young couples transitioning into their careers.
